1066, 40,000 MOTORCYCLES, AND ALL THAT

HOW ABOUT A BLAST DOWN TO HASTINGS ON MAYDAY

‘March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb’ seems to be reasonably accurate at the moment and Spring appears to have sprung down on the south coast as we roll towards April. As they do atthis time of year, the thoughts of the youngsters and oldsters of the motorcycling community alike, are turning to the biggest free to attend motorcycle festival in the UK. Yes it’s Bike 1066 in Hastings, where poor Harold bit the dust, coming up on Mayday May 5th.

This illustrious event is now in its 36th year, running every year since 1979 when a fellow called Tim Gooderson and some pals rode from Kent down to Hastings to celebrate the then new Mayday holiday. 200 bikes went along on that first ride but since then the number has risen a tad to 32,000 bikes and 76,000 people last year.

This year the event, which attracted more motorcycles in one day last year than the Isle of Man TT did in a week, is expecting 40,000 bikes – so quite a few then.

Mayday Mayday!

The event is run by Hastings council and bike 1066 which is a local company which promotes motorcycle tourism. It is a great lively event to really kick start the motorcycling year, with lots of stalls from traders and exhibitors, live music, food and a giant video screen showing showing live BSB from Oulton Park.

Last year the atmosphere was great and the sun shone on the multitude of motorcycles all delighted to be out on two wheels. So if you feel like dusting off the cobwebs and having a blow down to the south coast on Mayday, whatever your bike,  you will be in good company.
